If you have been watching the news and reading the newspaper, you know that Alabama education in general, and Clarke County Schools specifically, are suffering from a severe budget shortfall.  We NEED your help to provide items that will help us teach your children more effectively.  Our enrollment is down again from last year which translates into lost teacher units and more crowded classes for your child next year. Reasons for the declining enrollment include families moving out of Clarke County and a smaller enrollment in the fifth and sixth grade classes and losing a large eighth grade class that just graduated in the spring.  Many of our teachers regularly use their own money to buy supplies for their classroom and quietly help individual students with school expenses the parents aren't able to pay (such as field trips and uniform costs).  We very much appreciate the tissues, hand sanitizers, paper towels, and other items you send to help us out.

Ways that you can help us greatly include joining the PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization), collecting Box Tops for Education, sending Greers/Cashsavers Apples for the Student cash register receipts, and supporting fundraisers for the school and school sponsored organizations such as the Jr. Beta Club, SGA, WHMS Band, and others.

By joining the PTO, you are telling your child that you support WHMS and want us to be successful.  The $5 yearly membership fee is used completely at this school (not one penny is mailed away to a national organization) and if every student and teacher brought one membership, that would raise over $1500!  Students receive two FREE dress-out of uniform days for selling one membership.  We would love to have 100% membership in the PTO.  A printable form to join PTO is on this website. Please help us.

Box Tops for Education takes our submissions and rebates 10 cents for each one.  That doesn't sound like much, but with a lot of people collecting, it adds up.  Sometimes you will find bonus coupons on certain products too.  Please send all that you have and have your neighbors and relatives save for us, too!  The children were given a collection sheet a few days ago.  If you have it, fine.  If not, just send them in a zip-lock bag and we will affix them to the collection sheet ourselves.

The Greers/Cashsavers Apples for the Student program also helps us by allowing us to collect cash register receipts from September 1 through March 30.  The monetary total of the receipts collected allows us to purchase educational items from an extensive catalog provided by Greers.  Our goal this year is to collect $200,000  in receipts.  Our local Greers store has been very good to us, saving unwanted tickets and giving them to any school who asks for them.  When you shop, please ask the cashier or manager if he/she has extra tickets to send to WHMS. They always do!

In early November, the Jr. Beta Club will begin their annual chocolate bar sale to help with the expenses of the Alabama Jr. Beta State Convention.  Each student's trip costs $150 for the 3 days/2 nights in a motel, registration costs, convention tee shirts, teacher substitute costs, and other expenses, so they will be working hard to sell five cases of chocolate to pay their way.  We hope you will enjoy helping them by enjoying the delicious candy that they will be selling for their trip.  They will also be sponsoring several holiday bake sales over the course of the year to help defray the cost of the charter bus to Birmingham, the driver and his motel costs.  Please support these hardworking students and sponsors in this endeavor.

Other fundraisers include school-wide Krispy Kreme doughnut sales and Little Caesar's Pizza Kits.  The spirit shirts and jackets we sell help the school to pay for necessary items not funded by the state or local school board.  The WHMS Band has one big World's Finest chocolate bar fundraiser each January/February to raise ALL operating costs and purchase new instruments and music for an entire school year.  Additional fundraisers will continue throughout the year by various organizations, so please continue to support us and our students as we do what we can to make our school a better place for everyone. Thank you so much!
